BIO

Hans Rotmo (1948–2024) was one of Norway's most prominent folk singers and songwriters – a true storyteller with the ability to combine humor, seriousness and social criticism in the form of music. He passed away on October 24, 2024, but left behind a rich artistic legacy that still lives strongly in the Norwegian folk soul.

Raised in Verdal in Trøndelag, Rotmo developed a distinctive voice that captured the life, people and language of rural Norway with warmth and precision. Through his characteristic Trøndelag expression and his sharp social satire, he became one of the country's most significant songwriters.

His breakthrough came in the 1970s as the frontman of Vømmøl Spellmannslag, a band that combined folk music, folk songs and political satire in a way that was both innovative and popular. Songs like "Høvlerivisa", "Itjnå som kjem tå seg sjøl" and "Vømmølstevet" quickly became classics – songs that united workers, students and cultural figures in a common experience of recognition and pride.

After the Vømmøl era, Rotmo continued to write, produce and release music under various projects – including Vømmølbasen, Porcelen Band and several solo albums. In addition, he wrote plays, TV scripts and stories that bore the same human insight and linguistic playfulness that characterizes his lyrics.

Rotmo was never afraid to challenge. He commented on society with a mixture of warmth and satire, and his ability to balance seriousness and humour made him an indispensable voice in Norwegian culture. With albums like "Vømmøl Kommune", "Blå Front" and "Høyt på strå" he created a musical universe that has inspired generations of artists and songwriters.

Hans Rotmo's music stands as a tribute to work, language, solidarity and love for the people and country he came from.
