BIO

Eigil Berg (b. 1949) is a composer, lyricist, vocalist and musician, and is considered a central figure in Norwegian popular music. He debuted in the late 1960s with the band Morgans, which had its first major success with Berg's own song "Eilas".

Throughout the 1970s and 80s, he became an important driving force in New Jordal Swingers, where he was behind a number of the band's most famous and beloved songs, including "Railroad Man", "Free and Easy", "Før lyset brenner ned", "Tornerose" and "Rock Machine". The latter was voted the best Norwegian song of all time by NRK listeners in 2003.

Berg's songwriting has had a wide reach. His music has been interpreted by artists such as Åse Kleveland, Paal Flaata, Bigbang and Trond Granlund. He has also collaborated with international rock'n'roll legends such as Chuck Berry, James Burton and Scotty Moore.

In addition to his band work, Eigil Berg has developed an extensive and critically acclaimed solo career. Albums such as Alhambra, Låtskriver, Nye spor and Skygge og sol show a songwriter with a great linguistic and musical range. In 2025 he released the album Bokhyllest, where the music is inspired by literature and writing – a project that clearly shows his lifelong fascination with words, stories and moods.

For his long-term and significant contribution to Norwegian music life, Eigil Berg was awarded the King's Medal of Merit in 2025. He also received the Norwegian State Artist's Scholarship in 2003.

Today, Eigil Berg is still active as a songwriter, performer and communicator – with music that encompasses both the personal and the public, and that connects memories, life experiences and the present.
